The Great Firewall: What You Need to Know

China blocks many Western websites and apps — Google (including Gmail, Maps, Drive), Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X (Twitter), YouTube, Netflix, and most news sites. You will need a VPN to access these services. Without one, you're limited to Chinese apps and services, which are excellent but different from what you're used to.

Critical: Install and test your VPN before you arrive in China. VPN provider websites are blocked inside China, so you can't download or subscribe once you're there. Test it thoroughly — some VPNs work one day and not the next.

VPN Recommendations for China (2026)

Not all VPNs work in China. The government actively blocks VPN protocols. Here are the ones that consistently work:

Tier 1: Most Reliable

  • Astrill VPN: The gold standard for China. Proprietary protocols (StealthVPN, OpenWeb) designed specifically to bypass the Great Firewall. Desktop and mobile apps. $15-30/month. The most reliable option.
  • LetsVPN: A China-focused VPN. Simple, fast, and affordable (~$5/month). Works on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac. Popular among expats in China.

Tier 2: Good Options

  • ExpressVPN: Proprietary Lightway protocol works intermittently. Good speeds when it connects. $12.95/month.
  • NordVPN: NordLynx (WireGuard variant) sometimes works. Large server network. $12.99/month.
  • Surfshark: Budget-friendly option. Camouflage mode can work. $2.49/month (2-year plan).

Tier 3: Free & Risky

  • Psiphon / Lantern: Free but unreliable. Speeds are very slow. Good as a backup.
  • Avoid completely free VPNs: They sell your data, inject ads, or don't work at all. Not worth the risk.

Pro tip: Subscribe for at least 1 month. Install on ALL your devices before departure. Test by connecting to a Hong Kong or Tokyo server. Save your VPN credentials offline — you won't be able to access your email for password resets without the VPN!

Alternative: International Roaming & eSIM

If you use international roaming (your home carrier's China plan), you bypass the Great Firewall entirely. Your data tunnels back to your home country. This means no VPN needed — Google, Instagram, WhatsApp all work normally.

  • eSIM options: Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad offer China eSIMs from $5-30. Holafly offers unlimited data plans. These also bypass the firewall.
  • Local SIM: China Mobile/Unicom/Telecom SIM cards are cheap (¥50-200/month) but DO NOT bypass the firewall — you'll need a VPN.

The Holy Trinity: Must-Have China Apps

💳

Alipay (支付宝)

The super-app you can't live without. Payments, metro QR codes, Didi (ride-hailing), bike sharing, train tickets, food delivery, and more. Link an international credit card. English interface available. Tip: Set up and verify your account before departure.

💬

WeChat (微信)

China's messaging app, used by 1.3 billion people. Essential for communicating with locals, joining group chats, and WeChat Pay. Some features require a Chinese friend to verify your account. English version available.

🚗

Didi (滴滴出行)

China's Uber. Available inside Alipay as a mini-program (no separate app needed). English interface. Pay with Alipay balance or linked card. Have your destination address written in Chinese to show the driver.

🗺️

Baidu Maps (百度地图) / Amap (高德地图)

Google Maps doesn't work well in China (GPS offset, outdated data). Baidu Maps and Amap are excellent — detailed transit directions, real-time traffic, POI search. Chinese-only but intuitive. Apple Maps actually works reasonably well in China and has English!

🏨

Trip.com (携程国际版)

Book trains, flights, hotels in English. Accepts international credit cards. Integrates with 12306 for train tickets. Your one-stop travel booking app.

🍜

Meituan (美团) / Dianping (大众点评)

China's Yelp + DoorDash. Find restaurants, read reviews, order food delivery. Mostly Chinese but photos and ratings are universal. Dianping is the review app; Meituan does delivery.

Pre-Trip Digital Checklist

  1. Subscribe to a VPN — Astrill or LetsVPN recommended. Install on all devices. Test it.
  2. Install Alipay — Create account, verify identity, link international credit card.
  3. Install WeChat — Create account, get verified by a friend if possible.
  4. Download offline maps — Google Maps offline areas, or switch to Apple Maps.
  5. Download translation app — Google Translate with offline Chinese pack, or Pleco.
  6. Save important info offline — Hotel address in Chinese, emergency numbers, VPN credentials.
  7. Consider eSIM — Buy a China eSIM from Airalo/Holafly for arrival-day connectivity.
  8. Print reservations — Hotel bookings, train tickets, visa documents as backup.

One more thing: Power banks are essential. You'll use your phone for payments, maps, translation, ride-hailing, and tickets all day. A 10,000mAh power bank is the most important accessory you'll pack. Also bring a universal adapter — China uses Type A and Type I sockets, 220V.

  • ExpressVPN:Lightway協議間歇性可用。$12.95/月。
  • NordVPN:NordLynx
