Start with the correct entry route

China now has several different visa-free arrangements. The correct route depends on your nationality, passport type, purpose of travel, length of stay, entry port and onward itinerary. Do not assume that a rule applying to one passport or airport applies to every traveler.

1. Unilateral or bilateral visa-free entry

Eligible ordinary-passport holders may enter for short stays without applying for a visa in advance. Under the unilateral program, permitted purposes commonly include tourism, business, visiting family or friends, exchange and transit, with stays of up to 30 days. The country list and validity dates can change. For example, Canada and the United Kingdom were added from 17 February through 31 December 2026.

Check before booking: confirm your passport's current eligibility on the website of the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence. A visa-free visit does not authorize work, long-term study or journalism.

2. 240-hour visa-free transit

Eligible nationals from 55 countries may transit through China for no more than 240 hours through 65 designated ports in 24 provincial-level regions. You need a valid international travel document and a confirmed ticket with a date and seat to a third country or region. Your route must genuinely be A → China → B, and you must remain within the area permitted for your entry port.

  • Check that both your nationality and chosen entry port are eligible.
  • Carry proof of the onward ticket and any documents required for the next destination.
  • Do not describe a round trip such as A → China → A as third-country transit.
  • Work, study and news reporting still require the appropriate visa or prior approval.

3. 24-hour direct transit

International passengers with an onward itinerary to a third country or region may qualify for 24-hour direct transit at eligible ports. Passengers who remain inside the restricted transit area may be exempt from immigration inspection at designated airports. Leaving the restricted area requires immigration approval or a temporary entry permit; admission is not automatic.

4. Tourist visa (L visa)

Apply for an L visa if your passport is not covered by a visa-free arrangement, your itinerary does not meet transit rules, or your purpose or intended stay falls outside an exemption. Requirements are location-specific. Common items may include an ordinary passport, online application form, compliant photo and itinerary/accommodation evidence or an invitation letter, but your local checklist is the controlling one.

  • The Visa Application Service Center advises that a passport with less than six months' validity risks refusal and recommends renewal.
  • Its application flow asks applicants to ensure at least two blank passport pages.
  • It recommends applying within three months before the planned trip so the visa remains valid for travel.

Fees, appointments and processing time

There is no reliable worldwide fee table. Consular fees, service-centre charges, available service speeds, appointment rules, fingerprint requirements and processing times vary by nationality and application location. Select your country and city at visaforchina.cn, then use that centre's current fee and document pages. Avoid buying non-refundable travel until you understand the applicable timetable and entry conditions.

Special regional and group arrangements

Cruise tourist groups: up to 15 days

A foreign tourist group of two or more people, organized and handled by a Chinese travel agency, may enter visa-free as a group at cruise ports in 13 designated cities. The group must continue to scheduled ports and leave China on the same cruise ship. The maximum stay is 15 days, with travel permitted in Beijing and specified coastal provincial-level regions.

Hainan: up to 30 days

Ordinary-passport holders from 59 eligible countries may enter and remain within Hainan for up to 30 days through any open port in Hainan for approved short-stay purposes including tourism, business, visits, family visits, medical treatment, conferences, exhibitions and sports. The arrangement does not cover work or study.

Arrival, registration and compliance

  • Accommodation registration: hotels normally register foreign guests. If staying in a private home or other non-hotel accommodation, make sure the legally required registration is completed promptly with the local public security authority.
  • Use one travel document: use the same passport for entry, transport bookings, accommodation registration and departure.
  • Stay within the permitted purpose and area: visa-free tourism does not permit unauthorized employment, study or reporting, and transit travelers must follow the geographic limits attached to their port.
  • Overstay consequences: illegal residence may result in a warning. In serious circumstances, the law provides for a fine of RMB 500 per day, capped at RMB 10,000, or detention for 5–15 days. Repatriation or deportation has separate entry-ban consequences; a five-year ban is not automatic for every overstay.
  • Tibet: access is subject to separate travel-permit arrangements. Confirm the current procedure with an authorized operator before finalizing the trip.

Before you buy your ticket

  1. Confirm nationality and passport type.
  2. Match the purpose and length of stay to a visa-free rule or the correct visa category.
  3. For transit, verify the exact entry port, permitted travel area and third-country onward ticket.
  4. Check passport validity, blank pages and destination-entry documents.
  5. Recheck an official source immediately before departure because policies and implementation details can change.
